Samsteypan experiments with dance, expanding and pushing its boundaries, with an emphasis on creativity and originality. Samsteypan creates work, not only for showing, but also for saying, using dance as a means of expression and communication. Working together since 2005 as an independent dance and physical theater collective, this group, made up of five dancers, choreographers and theatre artists actively seeks interdisciplinary collaborations with theatre artists, musicians, choreographers and dramaturges. Samsteypan is one of a few independent dance companies in Iceland, and therefore participates actively in building up the independent dance scene in the country. Over the past four years, Samsteypan has been awarded grants from the European Youth Commission, The Ministry of Science, Education and Culture of Iceland, City of Reykjavik, Prologus playwriting fund and the Icelandic Theater Committee The group has also enjoyed performing in The Faroe Islands, Germany, Finland, Italy and France. Most recently Samsteypan was nominated by the Icelandic Theater Awards as “Choreographer of the Year 2010″ for the piece Shake Me and again in 2009 for DJ Happiness. Members are; Ásgerður G. Gunnarsdóttir, Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Melkorka S. Magnúsdóttir, Vigdís Eva Guðmundsdóttir and Ragnheiður Bjarnarson.

          • What is it?: Two choreographers work together to create the perfect climax but when it comes to it, dancing together becomes difficult. Steps are left hanging with each and every crescendo collapsing under its own weight. Most of their ideas lack consistency, whilst their ambition to build the perfect climax offers nothing but disenchantment.
