Little Jesus

What is it?: An adventurous adaptation of the Gospel of Matthew about the birth and early life of Jesus, as told by clowns.

Following the success of The Seven Deadly Sins (see above), the four clowns shape-shifted and now happily narrate the story of Jesus Christ, his birth and early life.  This promises to be a heart-warming, revelatory, and strikingly original performance.

The place is Palestine in the Year of our Lord zero. The Romans have conquered Palestine and Herod is appointed Governor. When news spreads that a saviour will be born in the country, he issues an edict that all baby boys, two years old and young¬er, shall be killed. Things are bleak. And the chorus of clowns asks: Who on earth gives birth to a baby in such times?

We all know that the Christmas gospel is beautiful and festive but it is no less shocking and tragic. The clowns are irreverent. They overlook nothing; they look under every stone, turn everything on its head and tell the whole truth – and nothing but the truth. Even though it is cruel. Or funny.

Little Jesus was the unequivocal winner of Grí¬man, the Icelandic Drama Award, last spring. Little Jesus was selected the Production of the Year and the script took the Playwright of the Year award. The play received an additional seven nomina¬tions. Critics heaped praise on the production and the audience was moved and delighted. Theatre at its best!
